the sages say 10 reasons why

1. Do not wish for eternal health, as being void of sickness brings avarice. Thus is why the sages say " let your suffering be your medicine."

2. Do not fear hardship. Without hardship, the mind becomes prone to disdain and extravagance. Thus is why the sages say "live your life with hardship and worry."

3. Do not fear difficulties in your learning. A mind void of obstacles will learn in excess. Thus is why sages say "amidst hardship, you will find your enlightenment."

4. Do not fear evil in your practice. Without temptation, your aspiration will be weak. Thus is why the sages say "let all evil be your companion in practice."

5. Let there be obstacles in your endeavors. Success without hardship will bring meaningless goals. Thus is why the sages say "let many kalpas pass to achieve your success."

6. Never seek to gain from your friends. To seek gain is to forego loyalty. Thus is why the sages say "purity is the key to lasting friendship."

7. Do not expect the submission of others to your will, as it breeds arrogance. Thus is why the sages say "keep your adversaries as your neighbors."

8. Do not expect return when bestowing merit and virtue. To want return will cause you to connive. Thus is why the sages say "bestow virtue as easily as you would discard an old shoe."

9. Do not yearn for excessive gain as it will bring foolishness. Thus is why the sages say "may you become wealthy from the slightest of gains."

10. Do not attempt to expose all the unfairness you experience, as it will only foster resentment. Thus is why the sages say "my injustice be your path to deliverance."

It is easy to see the faults of others, but difficult to see the faults within. When one hides his faults yet seeks out the faults of others. the more corrupt his mind becomes.

Accomplishment requires continuous and undying effort. Much like the stream of water that flows endlessly to become the ocean.
